Of course when I called Kennedy's name, it wasn't really his name. And of course the entire class yelled out at once,"His name is Kenji. You have to call him Kenji."
I replied, "Kenji can tell me what he would like me to call him. I will call him anything. Even if he has never been called that before."
I opened a can of worms.
Nearly every third grader in the class wanted a new name. And I'll stick to my word. They're making name tags next time we meet so I can learn the new names. Until then, these are a few of my favorites.
Victoria(Savannah)
Bill Nye the Silent Guy(Josh)
Boom(Cameron)
And the best of them all...
Crazy Legs(Daniel)
I think I'm living a movie. I have the kids saluting to quiet down. Their eyes are on me until I say "at ease". Can I get arrested for that? Meh- Its Utah. People around here like the military. The third graders monkey up the flag pole, and the sixth graders want to put on a play. The first graders have the best "Blast Off" whisper I've ever seen. And we use sign language to say we need to go to the rest room. Its amazing. Its like we live on a different planet, but the kids are getting a kick out of it. And it keeps my life interesting.
