I received a phone call from a distant cousin in Kentucky who believed I would be interested in a photograph she had recovered from a cottage there that was scheduled to be renovated. I feel privileged to be able to identify the individuals present in the photo taken May 1968. Aunt Mabel (six times removed) was rumored to have been convicted of robbing Burlington Coat Factory. The Factory's motto rang true even then. "Burlington Coat Factory, We're more than great coats." Mabel is pictured wearing the night gown that inspired her to take such drastic measures and which secured her 15 years in the state penitentiary. "The Girls" were devastated (pictured from left to right: Anastasia Nikolaevna, "Baby Ruth", Gertrude Knotts, and Mabel). The police offered Mabel one last night on the town. They spent the evening winning a talent show dance off, performing what would be their last dance together. It is a tribute to their twinkle-toe days and was dedicated to Mickey Rooney, Mabel's high school sweetheart.
Interestingly enough, I was raised in a little town in northen Minnesota, the birth place of Francis Gumm, who would eventually be known as Judy Garland. Judy's fame and fortune stole the heart of Mickey right out from under Mabel, as she won a costarring role with him in "Babes in Arms." She is believed to have retaliated in 2005 by stealing a pair of Ruby Slippers from The Wizard of Oz from a museum in my home town shortly before her death. She was 98 years old.
