She could hear him in the living room, “Hey.”
“Hey Cam. What's up?” Talyn asked him, not leaving her spot on the love seat with her boyfriend.
“I was looking for Merrick.”
“She's in the back- want me to get her.”
“No need, “ Merrick interjected entering the living room.
“Merrick. You wanna walk?”
“Of course,” she grabbed her coat and ran out the door, “I'll be back.”
“When?” Talyn called out.
“Uh,” she heard the question behind her as the scampered down the stairs. She looked at Cam who shrugged. “Later!” she called out behind her.
They rounded the corner to the street that led up the foothills of the mountains. “How do you feel about the city?” he asked her as they turned around to look at the lights below.
“I'm kind of fascinated by it. I mean big cities like Minneapolis. The buildings are so tall. I can't barely breath when I look up at them.”
“Oh. Really?”
“Why? You're not a fan?”
“I think the lights are distracting,” He grabbed her shoulders and turned her about to look back at the Mountains, “I can't breath when I look up at them.” They stood there looking up at the line the sky made as it met the mountains. This is strangely romantic she thought. Why would I think that? Its Cam. I'm like a sister. He even said it himself. Regardless, she couldn't fight the thought she'd had.
They began their decent back down the hill. The sun had set long ago, and the winter air grew cold. Merrick pulled her jacket tightly around her, but the cold air felt as though it blew through her. She began to shiver.
“Here,” Cam pulled at the pink felt scarf he had wrapped around his neck, “I think you need my sister's scarf much more than I do.”
“Thanks,” she laughed, “Though it takes a guy like you to make it look good,” he placed the scarf behind her head, and began to fasten it around her neck, but stopped mid-knot realizing the natural intimacy of his actions. It startled him, as it did Merrick.
Woof! WOOF-WOOF!
Merrick screamed- startled.
Cam jumped- into Merrick's arms.
A neighborhood dog had sensed their walking by the outside of the fence that bordered his owner's yard, as they approached their apartment complex. Quickly, Cam lowered himself and straightened his jacket—awkwardly. They walked silently for a block or two. Merrick didn't want to force Cam to explain himself. She didn't know him well enough to know how, exactly, he'd react. As they rounded the bend, and the temple came into view, Cam broke the silence.
“Would you like to know my greatest fear?” he asked.
“What's that?” she smiled.
“Dogs,” he confessed.
The both began to laugh.

I'm sorry I never got off of the couch to see this in person.
I'm also sorry I never got out of bed to hear about it afterward.
You weren't a couch potato. I just can't say, "SHE was with her boyfriend" because then it sounds like Merrick has a boyfriend. And believe you me, Merrick NEVER has a boyfriend.
